Heidi Week 1 - Sketch Cards

I got a little carried away with the copic markers today... Made some mistakes, learned some places that I'd rather use paint to establish values, than the markers.  I do like several of the places I used the marker though... Today was my first time ever using the inking pens, or the markers, so it felt really really good to dig in and make some things that aren't perfect, but I'm still proud of.
Westworld's Maeve

We miss you, Mr. President.

Hulk angry.

Black widow will look more herself once her hair's red, I think :-)

I'll add the colored versions once I finish them.

Homework Week 1 - Heads

Jason Momoa, I guess...

Constance Wu, maybe...

Two of four sketch card heads for now. Working on the rest. Likeness is hard!

Heidi Foundational work, week 1: Asoro head and rendered features

this'll take some work.

I surprised myself here!  Wonder if I can pull it off again, when I'm not just copying Nguyen's every move off the video :-)

Week 1 - Sketch Cards - Head Bust

Hey guys,

I've been drawing sketch cards for Upper Deck and Marvel for a couple of years now.  They are 2.5"x3.5" and are a really attractive and collectible product that we can display and sell at a convention table or in an online store.

This week I'll cover head drawing because that is one the most important things one can learn.  There are three videos for this week:

Lecture videos:

First we'll learn construction, proportions, and study the planes of the head so we know how to build the head, simplify it and how light wraps around it.

Second, we'll review basic rendering and lighting notes before studying isolated facial features.

Thirdly, I'll walk you through how I create a sketch card (pencilling, inking, and using Watercolor  How to handle transparency, building values in stages, controlling temperature, and edges.

Homework

- If you've never done this before, draw one page of sketches of the John Asaro head using the Loomis approach to construct it.
- If you've never done this before, draw one page of facial feature isolations using rendering techniques

- Four Sketch cards with the bust only (head, neck and shoulders), any character of your choice but try a variety if possible (female and male, and young and old), different angles or expressions would be nice also.  The character can be from a comic, game, animation, or film. The only requirement is that they should be recognizable.

Material List

Materials list

These are the materials that I use.  If you have a comparable substitute, it should be fine.

9x12 Strathmore Bristol paper.  Thick paper so that markers shouldn’t bleed on the page behind the art, and water shouldn’t warp the paper too much.

- Watercolor (Holbein or Windsor Newton). Any 12 half pan set should be fine. This is very personal so you pick according to budget.

- This St. Petersburg White Nights watercolor set looks nice too.
Cold Press Watercolor 300gsm paper 9x12 (lots of texture)

Copic Multiliner SP 0.5mm water proof& copic proof pen
Copic Multiliner SP 0.3mm water proof& copic proof pen
Prisma Verithin color pencils These are hard color pencils that will allow you to make thin lines
Liquitex marker set (for sketching)
Windsor Newton Series 7 #0-3 brush set (dickblick)
Or just buy one brush.
